What was studied
An 11-week study of a Launceston community music program, with observation, 90 questionnaire respondents and 12 director-nominated interviewees.
What it contributes
Stories include achievement, anxiety, practice constraints and instrument availability. For some players, the instrument available to borrow shaped their choice.
Where the evidence stops
One established program and selected interviewees do not establish a causal effect of loans or graded bands on retention. Ensemble memberships overlap and must not be summed as distinct people.
