What was studied

A qualitative dissertation with 37 interviews, more than 100 hours of observation and archival work in one adult band.

What it contributes

Band membership and musical achievement were meaningful, but participants did not all embrace the label “musician.”

Where the evidence stops

One selected group and the researcher’s insider role shape the account. Identity labels should not be imposed on other participants or interpreted as measured health outcomes.
