What was studied
A qualitative dissertation with 22 current Bellefonte community band members, using interviews, observation and artifacts.
What it contributes
Members described personal connections, camaraderie and emotions associated with making music together.
Where the evidence stops
All participants were White and already involved in the band. There was no comparison with people who left or never joined, so sustained membership cannot be causally explained.
