Eight months of interviews and observation in an auditioned community band in the northeastern United States, focused on five continuing male players and their male conductor.
What it contributes
Challenging repertoire and established friendships shaped the accounts of commitment. Work and travel also affected what participants could sustain.
Where the evidence stops
Six selected men in an established musical and social group do not represent beginners, people returning after a break, nonmembers or every ensemble. The study does not establish health effects or causal retention strategies.
