What was studied
Within-subject experiments involved 27 drug-abuse patients and 24 chronic-pain patients using exercise machines that controlled electronic music, compared with passive listening.
What it contributes
Twenty-seven drug-abuse patients and 24 chronic-pain patients rated music generated through exercise-controlled electronic apparatus more positively than similar passively heard music.
Where the evidence stops
Two small within-subject clinical samples used electronic exercise machines that controlled music; this is not a conventional wind/brass/percussion band. Generalization beyond the apparatus and patient groups is limited. The apparatus combined music with exercise; the effects of ordinary group playing cannot be isolated from this design.
